Overview
Four hours south-west of Cairo, the fields give out and the Western Desert takes over. Bahariya Oasis is the last town. Past it, the Black Desert is dotted with volcanic hills capped in dark iron, and beyond that lies the White Desert: a chalk plateau the wind has worn into mushrooms, towers and animal shapes that seem to glow at dusk.
That is where you sleep. The crew lays out mattresses and blankets behind a windbreak and cooks chicken and vegetables buried in the sand under hot coals; after dinner, the sky takes over. It is one of the darkest places in North Africa you can reach, with a Milky Way bright enough to show the horizon, and desert foxes often come to the edge of camp. The sunrise over the chalk is what everyone remembers.
