Overview

There is no quicker way into ancient Egypt than a morning at Giza and an afternoon at the GEM. Before lunch you cover the plateau: Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic point and the Sphinx. Afterwards you go next door to the Grand Egyptian Museum, a building that cost a billion dollars, set beneath the pyramids, which at last gives the 5,400 objects from Tutankhamun's tomb the room they need — along with the Grand Staircase of royal statues and the Hanging Obelisk.

Nowhere does a guide make more difference. The GEM is huge, and whether you spend three hours wandering or three hours following the story depends entirely on who is with you.

Itinerary

    Hotel pickup

    You meet your guide and leave for the plateau ahead of the tour coaches.

    Giza Plateau

    Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the boat pits and the eastern cemetery, with time to walk right up to Khufu's casing stones.

  3. 10:30

    Panoramic viewpoint & Sphinx

    The nine pyramids seen from the desert, then the Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre.

  4. 12:30

    Lunch

    A set Egyptian menu at a restaurant looking out over the plateau.

  5. 14:00

    Grand Egyptian Museum

    Ramses II towering over the atrium, the Grand Staircase, and the two Tutankhamun galleries that hold everything from his tomb.

  6. 17:00

    Return to your hotel

    Back through Giza, stopping for photos if you would like.
