About
The GEM covers 490,000 square metres at the edge of the Giza plateau, with a translucent alabaster façade cut in a Sierpinski triangle pattern. The Grand Staircase rises six levels through royal statuary and ends at a glass wall framing the pyramids.
The main galleries run chronologically from prehistory to the Roman period across twelve halls. The two Tutankhamun galleries hold all 5,400 objects from KV62 together for the first time since Carter emptied the tomb — including the nested shrines, six chariots, the golden mask and the objects never previously displayed.
History
Announced in 2002, foundation stone laid in 2005, and opened after two decades of construction and repeated delays. The 83-tonne colossus of Ramses II in the atrium was moved from Ramses Square in central Cairo in 2006 in an operation that took ten hours.
