Overview

At the southern tip of Sinai, where the Gulf of Suez meets the Gulf of Aqaba, the currents meeting at Ras Mohamed carry enough nutrients to feed some of the richest reefs anywhere. It was declared Egypt's first national park in 1983, and it shows: the coral is dense, the fish ignore swimmers, and you can often see more than thirty metres through the water.

The boat stops three times, and the captain picks the sites for the day's conditions — usually Shark Observatory, Yolanda Reef, where the cargo of a 1980 wreck (toilets and BMW parts among it) lies across the coral, and a shallow garden for beginners. Masks, snorkels, fins and vests are all included, and an instructor swims with anyone who would like help.

  • Wear comfortable closed shoes — most sites have uneven stone ground.
  • Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; shade is limited at open-air sites.
  • Modest dress is required for mosques and churches: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Photography is free at most sites; some tombs and museums charge a small camera fee.
