Overview
Nubia's heartland was flooded when Lake Nasser filled, and the communities were resettled around Aswan. The villages on the west bank keep the architecture — flat-roofed houses painted in blocks of cobalt, ochre and lime, with domed rooms designed to move hot air.
You sail across, walk through the village with a Nubian guide, drink karkadeh (hibiscus tea) in a family house, and if you want it, have henna done. Children get to meet the household crocodile, which is a real Nubian tradition and quite safe. The sail back at sunset past Elephantine Island and the Old Cataract Hotel is the part everyone remembers.
