Overview
For five centuries the New Kingdom's rulers gave up on pyramids and hid their tombs in a dry valley behind the Theban hills, trusting that no one would find them. The robbers usually did — but the paintings survived, and they are why you come. Ceilings mapped with stars, walls covered in the Book of Gates, colours that look ten years old rather than three thousand.
Your ticket includes three tombs. Your guide chooses the best three open that day and explains them outside, since guiding is not allowed inside, then you go in and take your time. Next comes Hatshepsut's temple, three colonnaded terraces set against the cliff, and the morning ends with the Colossi of Memnon.
