Overview
Almost nobody thinks of Cairo as a place to get in a kayak, which is exactly why it works. The stretch below Zamalek is wide, slow and sheltered, and at first light it carries almost no traffic — a few rowing eights out of the clubs, some fishermen, and a lot of birds.
You go out with a guide in a stable sit-on-top kayak, singles or doubles, after a short briefing on the bank. No experience is needed and the pace is set by the slowest paddler. The route hugs the island shore and turns at the houseboats, roughly five kilometres in total with as many stops as the group wants.
Sunrise is the departure worth taking: the air is cool, the water is glass, and the city comes up behind you while you are on it.
