Overview

The two best views of Cairo are from the water and from directly above it, and this puts them an hour apart. You sail first, on a private felucca out of Zamalek, for an hour while the sun drops. Then you walk up to the Cairo Tower — it is on the same island, five minutes away — and go to the observation deck as the city switches on.

The tower is 187 metres of concrete lattice built in the early sixties, and the deck runs the whole way round. From it you can trace the river you were just on, pick out the Citadel and Al-Azhar to the east, and on a clear evening see the pyramids as three shapes on the western horizon.

Tower entry is included and skipped-queue, which matters — the lift queue at sunset is the longest of the day.
