Overview
Dendera is the reason people talk about Egyptian colour. The Temple of Hathor was buried in sand for centuries, and its hypostyle ceiling — cleaned of soot only recently — shows the sky goddess Nut swallowing and rebirthing the sun in blues and golds that look freshly applied. There is also a crypt you can climb into and a roof chapel with a view over the whole Qena bend.
Abydos, further north, is the cult centre of Osiris and holds Seti I's temple with the King List: a wall naming 76 pharaohs in sequence, which is one of the primary sources for Egyptian chronology. The relief carving here is the finest of the New Kingdom. Both sites see a fraction of Luxor's visitor numbers.
