Overview
Most visitors go to Giza and never see how the Egyptians got there. This day is the prequel. Saqqara holds Djoser's Step Pyramid — six mastabas stacked by Imhotep in the 27th century BC and the first large stone building anywhere. Dahshur holds Sneferu's two attempts at a smooth-sided pyramid: the Bent Pyramid, whose angle changes halfway up because it was cracking, and the Red Pyramid, which finally got it right and which you can climb down into with almost nobody else there.
Memphis closes the day — the Old Kingdom capital, now an open-air museum around a fallen colossus of Ramses II. Crowds here are a fraction of Giza's and photography is unobstructed.
