Overview

Cairo is a night city. The old quarter that feels overwhelming at two in the afternoon is a different place at nine in the evening: the mosques are lit, the lanes are full of families rather than tour groups, and the temperature is finally reasonable.

You walk about three kilometres, slowly, with a guide who lives here. Down Al-Muizz — a straight Fatimid street lined with Mamluk facades and closed to traffic after dark — past the Qalawun complex and the Al-Aqmar mosque, through the spice lanes behind Khan El Khalili, and out at Bab Zuweila. Stops for tea, for a sandwich from a stall the guide vouches for, and for however long you want at anything that catches you.

Comfortable shoes, and come hungry rather than fed.
