Overview
Aswan's three big sights fit easily into half a day. The Unfinished Obelisk still lies in the quarry where it split 3,500 years ago. Standing, it would have been the largest obelisk ever carved — close to 42 metres and 1,200 tonnes — and the stone left behind shows precisely how the carving was done.
The High Dam is the key to modern Egypt: a 3.6-kilometre wall of rock fill which stopped the yearly flood, created Lake Nasser, and made it necessary to rescue Philae and Abu Simbel. Philae comes last — Isis's temple, moved from one island to another in the 1970s and reached by open motorboat over water that is usually glassy in the morning.
