Mount Sinai

The traditional route is the camel path — a steady two-and-a-half-hour climb to a plateau where Bedouin sell tea and blankets — followed by 750 rough-cut steps to the summit. The alternative, the 3,750 Steps of Penitence cut by a single monk, is far harder and usually taken on the descent.

At the top a small chapel and a mosque share the summit. Sunrise over the Sinai range from here is the single most-photographed sunrise in the Middle East.

Identified since at least the 4th century AD as the mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments, and sacred in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Around 40,000 people a year make the climb.
